| Turkey's total natural stone exports were $1.7 million in 1979 but ascended to $7.3 million
in 1981.
In 1979, exports of block marble and travertine occupied the most
significant place in natural stones; exports of processed marble and travertine
followed.
Nevertheless, in 1981, exports of processed marble and travertine
took over exports of block marble and travertine. In that year, the block
marble and travertine exports stood at 35,000 tons and $3 million, 40.5% of
all natural stone exports, while processed marble and travertine exports
were 10,500,000 sqm and $4.3 million, with a share of 59% of natural stone
exports. Granite exports could only claim a share of 1% with $24,000.
Until 1984, when 1981 is taken as a base, natural stone exports decreased and
vacillated around $6.6 million. In 1984, total natural stone exports
were stuck at $4.8 million. Exports of processed marble and travertine
measured up to 73% of total natural stone exports with $3.5 million.
Conversely, exports of block marble grabbed a 26% of share with $1.3
million.
Consequently, between the years 1979-1984, our natural stone
exports did well parallel to our general exports and developed
qualitatively as well. Block marble and travertine exports with low
value added were supplanted by processed marble and travertine exports
producing more value added.
